Today, to avoid disappointing my excited great grandmother, I still attended a small family dinner to celebrate my engagement. My fiancé and I split last night, I haven't slept and had to tell her he was caught up at work. FML

Wow, it's obvious how much she means to you; that must have been excruciating! I'm sure she would have understood, but what's done is done. Hang in there!

She has seen and experienced so much in her life she probably has a great perspective on the situation. Confide in her. Elders aren't as fragile as we tend to think. She might enjoy talking about love and it's complications. Let her try to cheer you up instead of being hurt more having to pretend for her. Might even learn some surprising things about her.

That was so wonderful of you to do OP. Im so sorry to hear about the breakup

I'm surprised so many people are saying this was a good idea. She's going to find out eventually, so why lie? For her to have one more night of being excited for you?

Oh man, just knowing you went through it all for her humbles me. I just hope she knows how much she means to you.

I don't see how this is nice; it's just stupid. Even if you didn't want to disappoint her, it'll just disappoint her more now when she does eventually find out.

She'll be even more disappointed when she finds out you lied to her. There are times when lying is the considerate thing to do. This wasn't one of them.

Uh, she's gonna find out eventually. You have to tell her sometime.
