Today, my boyfriend of a month had to leave early. I asked him why and he replied that his brother was getting off the bus and he needed to feed him. I had never met his brother, and I said "He can't feed himself? What is he, retarded?" He is. FML

the word IS synonymous with stupid, that's why people are still arguing about it. to retard is to slow or delay something, hence when referring to one's mental capacity it is, or was, apt to say a mentally slow person was retarded.

This sorta reminds me of when I worked at a 7-11. The guy I was working with was clearly not paying attention to his job at all. A man bought a drink and asked my co-worker to open it for him. How does he respond? "Can't you open it yourself, you look like a strong enough man." I was just about to stop him but too late. The man had one arm and I'd seen him before. I opened the drink for the man. Needless to say, you should really watch your mouth.
