Today, my boyfriend asked my father for permission to marry me. My father refused, on the basis that I'm the only person in the house with a job, and if I leave he will have to start looking for work. My boyfriend won't marry me without his permission, and my lazy father won't change his mind. FML

While that is respectful and decent of your boyfriend. I think he needs to ignore your dads opinion as it sounds like he is planning on leeching off you for the long haul.

sorry, OP, that really sucks, but at the same time, you should both get a backbone. You could move out (obviously you can afford it if you're supporting the whole house), and it's not wrong for your boyfriend to marry you if your dad is unreasonable. Still, sucky position to be in, FYL

I think the asking permission to marry the daughter originated a few hundred uears ago, when.girls were married off at the ripe old age of 13.....and back then permission was needed cause.women and girls were viewed as property. Times have changed and women get married when they are adults and can make their own choices.
