In my high school, nobody carried books. We didnt have lockers either. We all kept our textbooks at home and there were textbooks under our desks in each class. In college I never carried a textbook either since I didn't get any reading done on campus anyways.

Or, you know, put the bag on the floor or in the backseat. And maybe store books you don't need for a class in the car and switch out between classes if you are beyond the locker years.
