I got stuck once and a guy called his friend who's a tech and instructed him how to manually open it. Not sure how that would make you feel better... But I was glad.

Not really, no. Most of the master controls are not located inside the elevator. xP Generally the mechanic is OUTSIDE when things happen.

Elevator mechanics shouldn't ride in elevators for this reason if the elevator is nearing inspection day
