Today, I've owned my dream car for 11 days. Someone backed into it while it parked at work, and drove away without leaving a note. A man at a nearby business knows who did it but won't tell me because it was one of his customers. FML

Get the cops involved. The business owner will have to give away who hit your car as he would otherwise be charged with obstruction of justice for withholding important information about a crime.

Ok I'm not a law guru but I believe he has to say who did it as he is not supplying information of a crime. But hey as I said I'm no guru so I have no idea

where i live, he has to supply evidence, if he doesn't, you could just send the police there to get the information

only if he is subpoenaed, otherwise there is nothing that requires him to give it up

it would be easy enough for him to say he doesn't know to the police. how are you going to prove he does.

As soon as the police mention the words "Aiding and Abetting", he may suddenly "remember" who it was.

Isn't it illegal to withhold information like that?

Looks like it's time to contact the authorities.

glad I'm not the only one who thought that must've been obstruction of justice... besides, I get that it was a customer, but it's not like the guy will know the business owner gave him up...

While technically true, where I live cops don't care about such small crimes, and while they would take a police report, they would never go to investigate a hit and run without an injury.

That's when you go to the local paper saying that the business owner is withholding information about a crime and see how quickly he changes his mind.

I don't know how people damage other people's stuff and just drive away. That would eat at my conscience so bad, saving money wouldn't even be worth the guilt.

A lot of people probably would rather deal with stuff eating at their conscience than their wallet.

I think some people panic and run off before their brain kicks in, but they're too afraid of going back and fessing up.

I once backed into a boat. Do you have any idea how expensive boats are?! I had to go into the store and find the owner (ended up being the store owner) and tell them I hit their boat. I was in tears. All the damage it did was I had a busted tail light. They told me not to worry and thanked me for telling them and gave me a hug. I don't know how I missed a boat. I don't even live near a lake! I'm also not allowed to drive my husband's vehicle anymore... it sucks but you man up and tell whoever you hit that you hit them. I had a person hit my car and try to drive off. They couldn't so they got out and walked. Left the car. No insurance, of course, so I had to pay. Idiots.

you're a good person. and the person that hit you should be arrested.

Pretty sure withholding information of a crime, minor or otherwise, is illegal hey. I think maybe you should get the police involved. Im sorry about the car and sticky situation, OP. xx

You know the rules, snitches lose customers

That completely sucks. similar thing happened to me awhile back. had my car a month, was inside paying for gas and a work truck backed into it. no cameras at the gas station and nobody else stepped up, so i had to pay out of pocket. luckily it was just the front bumper with a small-ish dent so i didn't care much. call the cops, because they will make him give up the information and any video footage. best of luck

Oh, well if he doesnt want to say anything maybe i dont know call a good friend of mine, here i got the number ill give it to you the number is 911, they usually settle any disputes or problems i have and they're available 24/7!!!!

just become a regular customer for like a week and spend a bunch of money and then try again

shouldn't have to do that to get information that she should know
