Today, my parents met my fiancée's parents for the first time in a large family gathering two weeks before our formal wedding. Both sets of parents were telling funny stories about our pasts. My dad's story won. He told how I spent a week in jail earlier this year. FML

Not really.. I've been married for 5 years and I just recently got a good idea of what my FIL does. Of course, in his case, it involves having specific security clearance with the military and living overseas, so maybe that's why. The fam always brushed it off as "something too boring to explain."

Well, I can only give my anecdote (and perhaps speak for a few of my close friends/relatives), but I knew what my husbands parents do before we were engaged, and before I met them for the first time. My sister knows what her boyfriend's parents do (and so do I, for that matter), and I think that knowing this information is common amongst my friends/family. It just comes up in conversation. OP-think before you insult something next time! Even if your future FIL wasn't a garbage man, what if his father was? or his brother, or someone else he is close too/respected?
