OP's fault for joking? My dad had just about the worst temper of anyone I've ever met, and even he wouldn't have hauled off and hit one of his kids for that, even if it was serious. OP's dad is an adult, so by this time in his life he should have a little something called "impulse control." Being angry doesn't give you the right to commit battery. That's why there's no "I was ticked off" defense when you get arrested/sued for hitting/beating someone.
