Like someone else suggested, maybe you should look for people you know, perhaps they don't know that you have a facebook account.

If I were you, I'd cherish, the gesture shown by your parents. You are lucky your parents sent those requests, most parents do not care about these things. By the way as others suggested, you contact people and soon you'll have other friends too.
