I've had everything, from braces (twice), retainers, permenant retainers, rubber bands, and head gear, and still have two more years with my current set of braces. You'll be fine.

I don't think this is an FML at all. Let me tell you a story...I've always hated having a gap in my front teeth. Every time i look at them, it reminds me of when I was horsing around and my brother tripped me on a set of concrete stairs destroying my first front teeth when I was really young. The second ones grew in with a gap, of course my brother's grew in perfectly straight. So I asked...yes, ASKED for braces when I was about 12 and my parents made up all sorts of excuses "You don't want to be called metal mouth, your teeth are fine, they're too expensive! etc." I took their word for it, and of course looking back I know they were just being cheap...over time this cheapness was all too common :P As soon as I establish myself enough and get some money together I'm strongly considering going on the invisalign program.

My orthodontist said I needed my braces for 2 years and then needed a retainer for the same amount. Luckily for me, it's been a year and I am hopefully getting my braces off next session. Sucks for Americans though, no NHS =D.
