Today, I finally summed up the courage to break up with my abusively controlling girlfriend. I don't know what I was thinking, but instead of leaving as a free man, I left as an engaged one. FML

Stop being a wimp an grow some balls. Tell her you don't want to be in a relationship and that's it. Cut her completely from your life. You don't need someone like that in your life, and she will only get worse.

I think u need to bring a bro for moral support next time.

I dont understand how you managed to do that.

Why do so many asume that OP is talking about physical abuse? He said "abusively controlling". Considering this whole story, it seems to me that she must be highly manipulative, which means that she abuses the emotional impact she has on him in subtle ways that sneak past attributes such as strength and courage. A person can be strong as a rock in direct confrontation, and still be completely dumbfounded when subjected to such sly techniques. And of course he didn't say "I'm leaving you because you are so controlling", something she would just claim that he was imagining, which her tearful eyes would half-convince him was true. He probably said things like "I think we have grown apart" an all the other things you say if you're afraid of hurting your partner's feelings, which you are if you can't help caring about the person although you see that the relationship is unhealthy. If he tried to present reasons why they should break up, she probably just logically shot them down, followed by a passionate "I love you". P.S.: I read some of the comments when I saw this FML again, and noticed that a lot of you suggest that he lacks male genitals. I realize you don't mean this literally, but how is breaking up with a partner in _any_ way a masculine thing?? I am very confused. It is quite normal for women to end relationships, and they usually manage it just fine...

It's not really a guy thing but most people, including me, think he is being a wimp and he should really be a man and stick up for himself. We are not suggesting, however, that girls are not capable of that also. Oh and please don't read this with a bitch tone I just suck at trying to say something over typing without sounding like one, sorry! :(

This reminds me of the "Friends" episode in which chandler tries to quit the gym. Ahaha
