Around here we have a theory test (identifying signs, picking which lane to use in given situations, etc.) that you take for your learning permit, then you take a skills test 6+ months later after you've had experience and formal training.

#11 It is actually true that they have a limit. DVLA deny it but the instructors can confirm it - mine did, as did 2 others I know. And I also learned in Edinburgh, so chances are OP went to the same test centre. OP - when you rebook your test go for the start of the month. That's what I did and the instructor was rather lenient as her quota was nowhere near filled. Of course they may be slightly harsher on you as you already drive and 'shouldn't' make mistakes.
