Today, during my first date with a girl I've liked for awhile, she tells me about some minor disabilities she was born with. Wanting to be honest with her too, I tell her I'm slightly autistic. Her response was, "I'm sorry this isn't going to work. I can't date a retard." I had to eat alone after that. FML

I have worked for/advocated for people with disabilities all of my adult life. I wish that people could look past the "disability " and see the individual! I watched a film about a woman with autism during a training and she was non verbal and kind of just swayed around. To look at her most people would judge that she wasn't "high functioning". However, she used a talking computer to tell the world about the mind of a severely autistic person in the most beautifully put together, grammatically correct speech that even an English Professor would be proud of. It was amazing and enlightening. OP, there isn't anything wrong with you & there are plenty of women out there for you.

It's possible to be both intelligent and non-verbal, but you have to admit that's a somewhat uncommon combination. Usually when the case is severe, the IQ is affected negatively, and even a lot of mid- and high-functioning cases have seen greatly reduced IQ. Not to say that the girl in the FML was right, just pointing out that not all cases are created equal

A lot of that depends on the childhood development of the brain. Lots of deaf kids are intelligent and non-verbal because their parents didn't let the hearing disability become a learning disability. They simply compensated for it (ASL, etc) instead of ignoring it and the child. The same can be true for other brain disabilities. It's possible to catch (some of) them early so they don't become mental disabilities.

I'd disagree with the first comment. Considering that the way of judging IQ is a test based on both social and communication skills it is impossible to fairly judge someone's IQ if they have deficits in these areas. This is proven with non-whites scoring lower as it's a test based on Caucasian language and culture. Considering diagnose of autism must have 2 symptoms in both communication and social categories, its easy to see that there is no way to accurately judge an autistics iq

No. I know and know of plenty of severely autistic people who are very intelligent. Try again.

Shake it off, dude...she'll end up pregnant with a Virginia slim hanging from her lip, hanging outside a trailer window with a baby in her arms in no time.

Wow. You should have responded with "neither can I" and left her ass there first. Don't feel down about yourself. I know autism, it's hard when people have no clue what's up with you, but you don't new any misinformed people like her in your life.

Need* sorry, that was a weird typo/autocorrect.

Agree with 89. Could be considered very high functioning therefore has a 'bit' of it or whatever. Someone who's actually ON the spectrum should know that.

Most people don't think like her! Does it seem unusual that she would expect sympathy from you about her ailments but will not be sympathetic towards you? People like that make me sick!

Ouch thats overly harsh...I have Asperger's Syndrome (kinda like high function autism) so i know how hard something like that hits you.

Not the same deal at all. Your BF can boink you... You might be slow, or whatever, but you can still put out, right?

Slightly autistic isn't exactly retarded. I'm slightly autistic and I just have some social issues, ie: Eye contact and social akwardness
