Today, as a delivery driver, I have been stiffed in tips by three separate people because "a delivery fee is a tip, right?" FML

A tip is a tip. Ur still getting your hourly paycheck right? I used to be a delivery driver and never expected a tip so I was always happy whenever I got one no matter how small

Being European, I despise the American tipping system and I think the minimum wage should apply for everybody. A tip should be an extra bonus for outstanding service, not something that is expected. I personally would never think about tipping a delivery driver here at home, and certainly not if he's delivering goods rather than food. However, it is what it is. You live and work in the USA, so it should be common sense that you tip over there to let the delivery guy have a decent income. FYL OP.

It depends from place to place. At our restaurant the delivery fee goes straight to the driver.

Then where does the $3.49 delivery fee go?

Usually toward gas for the driver. I make $0.40/mile. Some places give their drivers a fixed amount per delivery, like $1.75/run. One perk of being a delivery driver, getting gas money from work.

I always tip when i order delievery. I think its wrong not to tip your delievery driver, unless they are mean or very very late, (which has yet to happen to me).

Most delivery drivers have to go in order in which they receive the tickets. I'm a delivery driver and I hate it when my boss assumes I can take 3-4 deliveries by myself within an hour with our 7 mile radius. This is the reason we're forced to speed to keep our job and get decent tips to cover for our bills. Ik it's frustrating when your delivery is late though.

Sounds like a really crappy job. Maybe look into driving for Uber where the tip is automatic?

there are no automatic tips w Uber also uber is now in the business of squeezing income out of drivers

I don't mind tipping the pizza guy/girl even though it's not required here, especially if they get to me quick and are pleasant. I know they get a crappy minimum wage that barely covers the cost of running their car, so I feel better for helping out.

I feel ya, working for dominos I get this a fair amount. I've had good luck ( as mentioned in a previous comment) bringing the extra stuff and when you give them the bill mention " I threw some napkins and pepper in there for you as well". It helps a bit

I honestly thought it was money specifically for the driver. Apparently it isn't, and I started tipping as soon as I was corrected.

Followup required, what do you deliver, and who is pocketing your delivery fee?

The delivery fee usually goes toward paying drivers gas money. Some make a flat rate, like $1.75/delivery, and some are based on mileage.

Some Businesses, I.E.: Pizza And Other Food That Deliver Consider The Delivery Fee The Drivers Money, Some Split The Fee, Some Stores Keep The Entire Fee For The Store. Never Expect A Tip, Never Hint That You Deserve A Tip Because Your Hourly Is So Low. Do The Best Job You Can And Hope For The Best, Remember As Nice And Generous As Tips Can Be, They Are Not Required.

As a fellow delivery driver, I hate this. My restaurant only recently started delivery (and we only have one driver on at a time), so first, many people don't know we deliver. Second, we don't allow tipping in the restaurant, so people think we also don't allow it for deliveries. And third, no, the delivery fee is not a tip! It goes toward mileage pay. I make $4/hour because they figure I'll make a lot in tips. Some days, I do, but most, I make maybe $5, $10 total, including mileage ($0.40/mile). It irritates me most when people write "0" in the tip line. Like, don't even write anything at that point. But there is the occasional customer who will hand me $10 and say, "Merry Christmas". I just try to do the best job I can, and my "usuals" end up tipping me a little more because of it.
