If the son is young, he simply needs to be taught. If the son is older, parent failed him. Either way, son is not the idiot here.

Do you have signage of some sort stating if dishes are clean or not? If not, whose the idiot? I have a sign that states clean/dirty. Everyone knows what’s in the dishwasher

They might be "clean" according to your slovenly standards. He just wanted them really, really clean. 33 cycles out to do the trick. That's what I do.

At least he was loading them at all. You can buy these slider things online that indicate if the dishes are clean or dirty. If it's that big of an issue, get one of those. They're cheap and stick right onto the front of any dishwasher. I don't think he's an idiot in this regard... he'd be an idiot if the dishes were clearly dirty and he proceeded to put them away.
