Today, I took my girlfriend of five and a half years to family dinner at a restaurant. After we all had finished dessert, I got down on one knee, pulled out my great grandmother's ring and proposed. The entire restaurant was dead silent. She looked around and then slowly walked out. FML

Same thing different taste

Today, I took my girlfriend to a very nice restaurant. I thought it would be a good place to pop the question. I gave the ring to the waiter and asked him to put it on her dessert plate. When she saw it she picked it up, put it down and said "no". Then she started to eat the dessert. FML

Today, I gathered both mine and my girlfriend's families secretly to a restaurant. I paid the restaurant to play romantic music, and paid for the best table available. As soon as we finished our meal, our families gathered around and I proposed. She laughed and said no way. FML

Today, I took my girlfriend of nearly 2 years out to dinner so I could propose. When the waiter brought the check, I caused a bit of a scene to get everyone's attention. When I got on my knee and proposed, she said no and asked if I could hurry up and pay, because she was embarrassed. FML

Today, I decided to pop the question to my beloved. Perfect lighting, fresh cut roses, a fancy dinner. The restaurant was in on it too. Shame they brought out the wedding-themed congratulations dessert before I actually went down on my knee. FML

Today, I invited my girlfriend over to a family lunch, planning to propose to her at just the right moment. My family was in on it, including my apparently disapproving mom, who kept causing a scene to grab my girlfriend's attention every time I went to pull out the ring. FML

Today, my boyfriend took me on a surprise date to an expensive restaurant. After the meal, he got down on his knee and proposed. We've only been dating for two weeks, so I said no. He just silently kept staring me in the eyes, no matter what I said or did. I ended up having to walk home. FML

So, I agree with all of those who suggested that a proposal should be private and intimate, I would never want a jumbo-tron proposal. On the other hand that really does suck for you OP, if you are a girl then maybe the family was just making a show of their support to the couple, many gay couples don't have very supportive families. Did her family reject her when she came out of the closet? If so then she probably misinterpreted your motives for proposing in front of your family, many ppl don't have supportive families and wouldn't understand the dynamic, then maybe you could talk to her about it and let her know why the family was there. This is, of course assuming that she wasn't cheating, you were pretty damn sure that she would say yes, that you didn't propose at a wall mart or a mcdonalds, and that you didn't check the wrong box indicating gender. I only assume these things because so far this seems like the most likely scenario.

Aww!!!!!! That's so awful!!!! I apologize, OP!!! Ugh, if my bf did that, I'd for sure say yes (not only b/c it would be embarassing to him if I said no, but b/c I love him). I'm sorry about that, OP! :'(
