Narcissistic parents

Today, my mom told an entire room full of people about the time I almost died from severe diarrhea as a toddler. When I told her that it was embarrassing, she simply told me to “grow up”. FML

Everytime my mom meets someone new she tells them the story of the one time I was so hungover I threw up in the subway. She thinks it's hilarious because I very rarely get that drunk. Everyone who listens to the story just cringes but she still thinks it's hilarious and keeps telling it... Then she wonders why I don't want to be around her. Smh

While I understand that this can feel embarrassing, neither diarrhea nor your mom's behaviour is under your control so try not be embarrassed.

I love to counter this with something stupid they did: the time I had diarrhea for whatever reason (given you were the one looking after me and controlled everything I ate and drank) vs. that time you (as an adult) yelled at me for a super minor thing, grounded me because I didn't fold laundry while I was doing homework, etc.. Works pretty well in my experience

I've had my fair share of embarrassing parents. I feel your pain.

turn the conversation around on her simply say oh you mean that time you allowed me to get so sick I almost died because you weren't taking care of me properly that'll shut her up

"Why do I have to just because YOU WON'T?"
