Today, I proposed to my girlfriend. She said she wanted to accept, but that she'd basically have to get her mom's permission first. Apparently the answer was no. The worst thing is that she really is this unhealthily dependent on her mom, and probably wasn't lying about needing her permission. FML

She'll probably struggle later in life until she becomes more independent, but you might be better off without this one, sadly

If she really feels that she needs permission, she probably isn't ready for marriage. There's a point when you just have to move on. You can't be in a relationship with someone who still wants to be their parents' baby.

That's what I was wondering, can't really judge the FML factor here without knowing that!

Seeing as the op uses words like "unhealthily dependant" , we can assume that she is at least old enough to be an independent person.

She needs to be on her own more. This can only get worse.

In my family it is customary to ask the father for permission before proposing. My fiancé did it, and my father said yes. I have rarely ever heard a father saying no. If the father is out of the picture here, maybe OPs girlfriend wanted the boyfriend to ask her mom to follow traditions. However, if she was always dependent on the mom like this then it is weird

Well I got nothing I'm unhealthily dependent on my mother too!

It is pretty likely that even if she does get permission that she'll likely transfer that unhealthily dependent to you. Keep that in mind OP.

I feel sorry for OP's girlfriend, sounds like some odd psychological dependence and I'd hate to live like that. Hopefully you can coax her independence, because it sounds like you must really love her. Best of luck to you both, OP :)

This is just sad. I get that she wants her mom to approve the marriage, but letting her take decisions for her is just wrong. I'm sorry, OP.

I think you dodged a bullet there OP. Marry her and you'll be marrying her mother as well. She'd probably move in with you. Find someone with a little more backbone.
