Casual homophobia

Today, I came out to my parents and siblings as gay. They were very accepting and asked me why I waited until I was 25 to do so. I didn't have the heart to tell them it was their own homophobic remarks that kept me closeted since I realized it at 14, and that a previous coming-out to a parent was dismissed as 'a phase'. FML

This is the exact situation I’m in with my mom, who still does not know I’m not cis and not het. It sucks the whole way through.

I fully understand. FYL. That said, though, I think you should tell them. If they never realize what they did wrong, they will never have a chance to change.

I tried to find non-bias data on how often gay is a phase and there isn't any. Which is weird I guess no one wants the heat from either direction.

A lot has changed in a decade as well.. They've also grown up.. my family didn't understand anxiety as a concept even 7 years ago. now they get it.. Be glad they're accepting it now
