Today, I was making the daily commute to work when suddenly my mother calls me, crying that there's been a death in the family, then abruptly hangs up. I speed home, to find my mother holding the tiny corpse of a fish that she got 2 weeks ago. I got fired for being late to work. FML

Did you not think to call into to work to mention that you would be late because of a family emergency? Showing up late without prior notice is pretty irresponsible (unless you were in an emergent situation that rendered you unable to call ... such as you had a heart attack or were trapped under a 10 car pileup or something.) Also, I know it's never nice to loose a pet, but to be so hysterical in a situation like this is odd. While it seems like poor judgement on your mothers part to call you, if she was truly upset, it may indicate a more serious issue such as depression.

I thought the fact that she hung up seemed a little fishy.

I understand that you're upset but i guess it wasn't your first time being late for work, otherwise you wouldn't get fired.

Some places are really strict on attendance. I've work at a couple places that if you weren't there clocked in and ready to work on time you were fired.

You are fired for one minute late even if you tell them beforehand? That's a little bit overreacted on the employers side.

Any place that has such strict attendance criteria are not worth working for.

Totally read this in a Ron Weasley voice.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I wrote it.

don't you just love these internet experts

I said the situation "may" indicate a serious condition. It could also be that the mother is a complete jokester. It could also be that the entire post is fabricated ... or a myriad other possibilities. I know it is not possible to render a medical or psychiatric diagnosis through an internet comment. I simply mentioned that it may be a possibility based on the limited information provided. Only a consultation to a trained medical professional can render a definitive diagnosis of clinical depression.

If your mother calls you in hysterics telling you there's been a death in the family, I can't say my first thought would be oh I better tell work. I'd be way too worried, upset and anxious to get home.

That's why you would ring back to find out what happened.

It could also be that she just really, really loved her lil pet fish.

8, Dude, he's one of the smartest, most articulate people on this website. Don't knock him.

I agree. My dog that I had for 15 years I had to put down this week. Before we made the decision my mom called me crying hysterically too because it's sad and upsetting. But I know that after I got off the phone with my mom I was booking it home, I didn't even think about calling work. On top of that, the appointment took longer, and I had to work, so I didn't think to call work to tell them I'm going to be late because I was saying goodbye to a family member.

usually, if a person has been told there has been a death in their family, their first concern most likely isn't going to be calling in for work to let them know they will be late; the only thing they think about is who died. so her job should be a little more understanding even though the death was of a fish, but how was OP supposed to know that? ? smh

& you're really going to call OP responsible here? how was OP supposed to know she was going to get a phone call about a death before hand? sorry but not the brightest comment mate

Look at it this way: you can always get another job, but your mom can't just get another fish ... wait ... yes, she can. Wow, that sucks.

Your mother needs a slap and to be tool to get a grip in a stern voice. She's an adult.

Your boss must be a total dick or something. I've been late just because I wasn't paying attention to the time and I didn't get in trouble for it.

As a Jedi, you should have noticed that the disturbance in the force was only miniscule. No wonder The Council fired you.

It's actually a very little known fact that fish are incredibly strong with the force. How do you think they're able to breathe underwater for their entire lives? Even the most powerful force sensitive human can't even manage it for a single day.
