Today, MLK Jr. Day, I was told that since my other co workers are on vacation, I have to be at work Today. No one else is at work Today...or on any other holiday. Also I am the only black person at my office. The irony, FML

You benefited from his life’s work. Let the others benefit from his memory.

Well you know... That great man gave his life so you could become an unappreciated wage-slave just like the rest of us whities!
Seriously though, it sucks that you're the only one... Have fun with it though.. Photoshop you and the King himself and put it around the office for when they get back!

While I do agree with you, I do want to add that some white people were essentially slaves too. They would come over as indentured servants and went into debt so bad that they couldn’t leave. They were treated like slaves. Also, women have been oppressed for thousands of years. While they were treated better than those in slavery, they had the same amount of rights (which is none).

Indentured servitude only lasted for a few years though while a slave was a slave for the rest of their life. So while yes a white person worked without pay, they did get land and other benefits sometimes after working for someone for 5-7 years. Also we started moving away from indentured servitude after Bacon's rebellion and started moving towards a slave system. So it is hardly comparable to compare indentured servitude to slavery.

Depending on the job you have you might have just gotten the short straw since people requested off that day. But if no one else was there you should have had the day off. But if your going to get time and a half ( if this is a holiday where you can get it). Then is not so so bad and if your alone then you might be able to get a lot more work done.
But I would also talk with your HR dept.

Yeah, that is certainly not right. But maybe you should follow MLK's example and not keep quiet about it. Nothing is going to happen unless you do something about it.

What better way for your people to celebrate your special day than by working for actual money, rather than the privilege of not being whipped?

WTF is wrong with you? How would you feel if your forefathers had been abducted, whipped, killed and raped and people made comments like that?

Personally, I'm more worried about future generations who'll look back on their ancestors and how they were butthurt, offended, miffed, displeased and had their jimmies rustled after taking humorous comments on the internet way too seriously, and the legacy of pain, indignity and general embarrassment that will leave.

White americans have no frame of reference of what it feels like to have to see documentarties and photos and hear accounts of how your forefathers were oppressed, how that shit gets you in the pit of your stomach. If you did, maybe you would realise that there are some things you just don't joke about. Tell you what: Here is a link to the church burning scene in "The Patriot". Watch it and decide what you would do to anyone who joked about that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtTljtBxtd0

That is true. The large Irish population in the US is also the result of Irish slaves sent there by the english so yeah, maybe my comment about white people not having been oppressed is wrong. I do think though that the guy who made that offensive comment has no idea of what that feels like and I think he should be a bit more sensitive.

Nah, what's real oppression is being called American. Nobody can even begin to fathom what kind of pain and slight annoyance that wreaks on my people.

Well see there is this thing called a pay check and it’s usually made out to the person that worked and it’s what is known as compensation for your work
