Today, I went to a big job interview. Everything went well at first, with the interviewer being impressed by my CV. I was then interrogated over not having a Facebook account, and practically accused of being a criminal, because people without them "always have something to hide". FML

Well, what are you trying to hide? On a more serious note, if they're that suspicious, you might not want to work with them anyway.

Well, that sucks a tonne, Facebook is overrated anyway.

if they were really suspicious of you they could've done a background check

Exactly. I think they are hiding their real reason for wanting a way to access their employees' private lives, and are just using the "suspicious potential killer" excuse as a coverup. (One that people are unfortunately swallowing hook, line and sinker.) It's a symptom of the police state, in action.

People must be smoking something fierce to think that everything on the Internet is the truth.

I deactivated my account years ago and I'm pretty normal.

I can see where the guy is coming from. I dont trust people that dont have facebook. you know unless they are old, they are excused from having facebook. why dont you have facebook? are you some kind of serial murderer?

Yes, yes I am. I don't have a facebook because I would rather go out and talk to friends to their face instead of on a useless, overhyped website. I have an axe with your name on it, #79.

Before you were born, there was this weird, obsolete practice known as the background check. I think they still do it sometimes. It's the places that have landline phones with those old-fashioned curly cords. You can see bloodstains from all those decades of serial killer employees overrunning the place.

before I was born. haha. I was born when people did not even know the word internet.

79, a lot of people will make a fake facebook account to target individual people for their own personal agenda whatever that might be, but I am sure you trust those people also, right? I'm not really seeing your point here.

i'm not seeing your point 94. this started as op not having a facebook account and you assuming he has one but under a fake name. my point is people that dont have it are usually antisocial to the extreme or have no friends outside of their immediate circle. facebook isnt about connecting to everyone its just about staying in contact with the people you want to. sure some people have thousands of "friends" but on the average its about keeping in contact with friends that you might be to busy to connect with any other way.

at least that is what I use it for. I live 1200 km's from my circle of friends and we use it to talk and make plans all the time. maybe others use it differently but I use it for keeping in touch with friends and family. its a tool.

No, I just have no social life. When I did use facebook, it seemed to have the opposite affect- hundreds of people I knew were my facebook friends, but few/no friends in real life.

If you are older than the internet, Viper, you have no excuse for not knowing how the world managed to function without social network websites. More power to you if you personally find it convenient. However, the way someone chooses to communicate with their inner circle is hardly anyone else's concern.

I don't have a FB account for two reasons: 1. I don't want to do business with Facebook. The repeated customer-hostile revisions to their Terms Of Service piss me off. 2. I don't see the purpose for such a thing in my life. I don't have kids so it's not like I'm keeping tabs on my kids who have FB accounts, either. FB seems to me to have two main purposes for its existence: 1. For people to post embarrassing photos of you doing sketchy things you'd rather your parents, partner, (potential) employer(s), etc., didn't see. 2. For annoying people from your past to find you and pop up and annoy you. Think I'll take a pass on both of those TYVM.

Well, people without Facebook are disproportionately likely to be serial killers. Though that's no grounds for denying someone a job.

ellytoad 13

There aren't enough serial killers to make a big enough sample size for a study like that. If there were, then your fact might have a bit more credibility beyond email forwards.

Sorry, I shouldn't have used such absolute terms. Employers and psychologists just think it's abnormal not to have an account. For some reason I thought there was a study backing that up.

I think it's just peer pressure. Someone isn't mindlessly following the herd, so he must be weird, and in people's minds, weird equals dangerous.

That's retarded. I'm without Facebook & I'm not a criminal!

Yeah in my case people always give me weird looks when i say I don't have a facebook account and they would ask me again and again as to why I don't have facebook!

They just want to have access to your personal life. And they will use it against you. I had a friend in HR who's boss used it against employees. You can have one just don't use your real information. And then set everything to private. If you must have one make a fake one and like nothing or just don't use it unless it's to make some kiss ass statement about how great your job is.
