I would much rather receive a gift that was hand-made or from the heart than one purchased at a store where no thought went into it.

Why don't you just solve the issue? Is it a money problem? If so tell your girlfriend and look up some diy things online. Make her dinner or cookies or do something cheap but adorable. Do you not know what to get her? Ask her. If she doesn't know take her shopping and tell her to pick things and you'll buy them. I can't think of any other issues you could be having. Breaking someone's heart over a christmas present is selfish and unfair.
