Today, I unexpectedly ran into my boss. Last week, I'd met with him every day, putting together a last-minute presentation of my research for him to deliver at conference overseas. It turns out that his passport had expired. FML

There's always a video call, but that is rather unfortunate. So sorry OP. I do hope it gets figured out!

That's unfortunate, but who doesn't check to make sure their passport is valid before an important trip?

OP you should ask for some sort of reward for your extra unneeded services

Do not do this. You will go much further by not asking for a raise after someone does something stupid and instead just letting it go. If you want a raise or something you should focus on doing your work + and then ask.

At the end of the day, if you get paid.. It won't matter. You can still say you did the work and be proud.

it might matter if a no-show at a conference causes someone (like OP even though its not his fault) to loose their job or get demoted

I know it might seem like you did all that work for nothing, but I assure you your boss noticed the dedication and hard work you put into it

Why didn't they send you in his place?

We are always lucky to have idiots to rule out lives.

Well it's done...when his passport is renewed it will be ready to go
