or get him to install waze which would show his location
Let's see. When your grandfather was born refrigeration was in its infancy (people used ice boxes). Penicillin was not in use. Television hasn't been invented. World War I was still just "The Great War" because WWII wouldn't happen for two more decades. It's amazing that he can even use a cell phone, and you thought it would be a great idea to try and teach him over the phone when he was upset and lost? How is this a "F" your life situation?
My first thought was, "what the hell happened to asking for directions at a gas station or something." Second thought was, "why the hell didn't OP find out where his grandfather was and have him wait there while OP went and got him?"
Are the streets unnamed in your town? Could you not have had him stop near an intersection, tell you the street names, and wait? Trying to explain while he's already lost and confused instead of finding a simple solution makes you an awful grandchild.
Then he did. I hope this is fake, because any common sense person would get Grandpa to stop at a safe place and to ask someone where he was so you could pick him up. Regardless, a 91 year old man with memory problems should not be driving period. He could very easily kill himself, or others.
Guys, obviously op did everything he could to find and help his grandpa. Maybe his grandpa was out in the country with no road signs, shops, gas stations nearby. I'm sure op didn't leave his grandfather out there for several hours if he could've done something different that would get him to his grandfather sooner. I mean, come on.
I hope you did find him eventually. But I have to say that maybe he shouldn't drive anymore. He's not just endangering himself but other people, too.

Why didn't you just tell him to park near the first recognizable building he happened to drive past (post office, supermarket, whatever...) and wait for you to meet him there ? I'm pretty sure this would've taken a lot less time and caused the poor old man a lot less stress.
Wouldn't it be easier for him to stop, you pinpoint his location, then you go get him so none of that would have happened?
