Today, I had to pay a $150 late fee because my landlord didn't receive the rent check. My boyfriend had addressed the envelope to himself and put the landlord's as the return address. FML

Blaming your boyfriend for something you are responsible for? Really? Get a grip.

Whose rent was it? Or do you both live together and go half on the rent....

we live together. he was supposed to write the check for his half and mail it

$150 late fee that's a to off!

the late fee is $50, but if you pay late you pay market value for rent, which is $100 more than I pay...so it totals 150 if it's late

I can see where he obviously messed up but I'm still thinking it's a little your fault because it's your responsibility to pay your rent no one else's. Maybe I'm just a jerk though

we split it cuz it's our rent. i gave him my check on the 25th; he was supposed to write his and send it

It's hard to believe people still use checks in the 21st century. Why not just pay your rent by automatic bank transfer?

A lot of rental properties prefer checks. I think they like the physical paper trail. Granted that could be solved with a receipt system or competent bookkeeping. I don't even have checks anymore. Haven't had a checkbook since 1999. My wife still does, and it's for those few stubborn bills where they won't take any other form of payment.

and why would YOU pay the late fee?
