He was helping himself out with his own New Years resolution from last year. He just did to good of a job. But yea ants or rats, neither are very good to have inside your home! ....or roaches....(body shudders at the thought)

I can see no way in which this isn't deserved. If you stash food in your house and leave it there for a year, you are basically giving vermin an invitation to hang out for the winter. If you did it because you had too much, well, buy less the next time.
