My theory is that OP and her ex knew each other before they started dating. He liked her, but wanted to figure out a fool proof way to woo her, so he made three different online aliases, met her in some pubic forum, made friends, got to know her better, THEN asked her out. It's actually quite clever, although equally creepy.
