Oh come on now. Their response is overdramatic, but how do you "forget" the light is on when you're getting into bed? You mean you were being lazy and wanted your partner to do it.

Uh, no? People can forget things all the time. I forget my lights when I'm home alone or have people around. I'm just forgetful, but loads of people could have something on their mind or just simple not think about it.

Yes, but forgetting to turn out the light when you're going to sleep is similar to forgetting to put a coat on when you go outside into the cold.
It becomes pretty obvious immediately and you go correct it yourself.

While it annoying to have the light on while you are trying to sleep. It seems the partner overreacted to a degree that makes me wonder if something else is really going on and this was just the last straw.
Some people suffer from depression during the holidays. And sometimes depression gets expressed as being irritable.

I don't think it was an over exaggerated reaction. They have probably reminded you 20 thousand times and you refuse to listen so they just didn't want to deal with it for one night

Sounds more like it was just the last straw for the night. You're probably doing multiple things that are weighing down on your SO and don't seem to give it any acknowledgement.
