There's an old joke about learning two things about wrestling with a pig: 1. You get mud all over you. 2. The pig likes it. Best to go to HR first rather than engaging them on their level.

Of course that happened, you shouldn't have expected anything else. People don't want to be called out on their shit and the workplace doesn't benefit from drama being created.
