Messed up country

Today, my absentee dad died in America and some branch of the American government decided that I need to settle his debts. "Which debts?" you ask. Unpaid child support. Yes, America wants me to pay them my own child support, despite never meeting my dad or even once setting foot in America. FML

You never owe money to cover your parent's debt when they pass. Any remaining debts are settled from their estate, not from you. You could end up being a creditor as well as eventual beneficiary, but you don't have to pay anything.

Sounds like someone was trying to scam you.

A quick Google search says you can’t inherit child support debt. The estate can be obligated to pay out, but you can’t. Lots of stuff in America is ******, but it’s not that far gone.
