Today, I saw a psychiatrist for the first time. After telling her everything I'm going through, she looked at me and said "You know… every five years or so I get a case completely beyond my ability to help." I guess it's been five years. FML

I think you should look for a different therapist....

At least she was honest with you instead of pretending to help and taking your money for weeks.

atleast you know up front, go find someone else

Now, confirming you do mean psychiatrist, as in qualified to prescribe medications, and not psychologist, who provides non chemical therapy? Because assuming you do mean a doctor to manage psychiatric medication, it's not as bad as other commenters seem to think. Yes, you should have gotten a referral to someone who can help, but if the doctor does not feel they can safely manage your specific issues with the knowledge the posses, then I would hope they would tell you to find someone else. This could be a case where you want someone who specializes in your condition.

She spent years studying psychology to get where she is, and you stumped her. All I heard from that was "you beat a professional." Now call it a win and look for a GOOD therapist.

I had the same thing happen to me twice; they gave up on me. Turns out I had been misdiagnosed with Anxiety and actually have ADHD. Once I was put on the right meds, I noticed a huge improvement.

I think that's incredibly unprofessional of the psychiatrist and you should seek another opinion from someone who can be bothered to put in the time and effort with you. Might be hard work op but I don't think anyone is beyond help. Take care of yourself.

How is it unprofessional to admit that a client needs more help than you can give? What would actually be unprofessional is if the psychiatrist kept her doubts to herself and continued taking OP's money when she knew she couldn't actually help.

It was unprofessional to suggest that OP is beyond help. A good psychiatrist would have said she's not an expert in the specific kind of problems OP has.

She never said OP was beyond help. She said OP was beyond "MY [HER] ability to help."

Hey, look on the bright side - at least she didn't lie and claim she could help just to take all of your money!

That actually happened to me a few years ago... But my doctor followed up with a referral to a doctor who specialized in cases like mine and she helped me with the transition to his office (inside an inpatient mental health clinic). You're better off having her tell you that your case is outside what she can handle rather than have he treat you incorrectly... Good luck!

It shouldn't be too wacky.,,maybe see another one for more insight..,

Oh, please! Psychiatrists have heard it all, and if she's unfit for helping you, she needs to rethink her practice. No doctor should lack professionalism and say that.

You should change therapists, the very first therapist I ever tried told me that I was making things up and that "my father couldn't have actually been that bad" yeah okay toots.
