exactly. when stuff like this happen, you need to report it right away, both in person and by email. this gives you an important timeline and evidence in case someone tries to take advantage

the Dean should trust their professors. but then again you not reporting them when it first happened is a moral downfall on your part. that just looks sketchy. No student deserves to still be enrolled in a university if they cheat.

Unfortunately these systems of reporting incidents are there to protect as much as they are to punish. Your boss can't protect you from something like this if they weren't aware of the situation, which is why you HAVE to report these things. A student who is dishonest enough to try to bribe a teacher shouldn't be let off with a warning, it may seem harsh but it's fair. They break the rules, they get punished. As it is, they break the rules, OP tried to be lenient, and now might lose his job. It's just not worth it.

Although I agree with what you're saying 21. I understand wanting to give the kid another chance. I also don't think op can lose his job because once they start an investigation they'll realize that there's nothing there and no proof of the incident. I'm sorry you're getting screwed for a good deed op! It sucks you got in trouble and I hope nothing comes from this investigation.

I deal with post-secondary institutions as part of my work. Unfortunately these days, students are very much the customer.

It's also unfair to the student to take accusations lightly. Teachers and professors are in positions with lots of unregulated power since they're trusted to act appropriately without supervision. I say it's only fair that this warrants an investigation.

I agree with 97, that would be like a female student, who was mistreated, reporting an incident and it going completely ignored because they trust their profs. Any serious incident should be treated as such no matter which side the complaint comes from. It sucks for OP but it does warrant an investigation. Hopefully it turns up the truth about what the student did.

And if OP did fail him, the student could claim OP was retaliating against him, which really would not help OP.
