Today, I found out that the little arrow next to my gas gauge actually points to the side of the car where the tank is. For the past year-and-a-half I've been sticking my head out the window and even calling my parents to ask which side it was on, because I can never remember. FML

Why do you need to call your parents when you could get out of the car and check for yourself? C'mon, it's not that hard.

You should know what side it's on after your first week with the car

Because the new American dream is about other people doing everything for us. Because we're 1) too good, 2) too stupid, and 3) too lazy to actually take care of ourselves.

Too true...but seriously, I don't know how it'd take OP so long to figure that out...

#10, Right on point! Lol I see that attitude at my job ALL the time. Well OP you kind of deserve it, its not that hard to remember which side you have to fill up.

I agree, 1. Definitely what our ancestors worked hard for. For the OP to sit in the car and call their parents instead of getting out and looking. OP, either you have to pull up and walk around to the other side to fill up, or you don't. So you should be able to remember if it's passenger side or driver side. One is right by your door. The other isn't. I feel like this is a girl I know…she always has her parents fill it up for her. Don't be lazy.

Well, in some states, such as New Jersey, it's illegal to fuel your own vehicle. The gas attendant must do it for you. That would explain why OP wouldn't bother to get out and look since he normally wouldn't have to do it. However, he is still a dumb ass.

If OP is in NJ, then there is no point calling the parents because the attendant would have told him/her that they are on the wrong side.

I learned what that arrow meant in drivers Ed. Even if you didn't take drivers ed for some reason, it's not that hard to figure out. And seriously. Calling your parents to ask? Wtf

Not that hard to remember what side the tank is on-- especially after a year.

Wait it's illegal to fuel your own car in some states? Dafuq?

It's like that in Oregon. We love it! You sit on your ass while someone else pumps your gas! It's especially great when it is raining or cold or something like that.

But even if you don't pump it yourself, you still need to pull up to the right side depending on which side the gas door is. You'd think after a year and a half she's year.

Just remember to tip your attendant, if you do nobody minds pumping your gas for you. I worked at a full serve spot in Nova Scotia for over a year.

94, at least in Oregon you can pump your own diesel, dunno about NJ though

You should know what side it's on after your first week with the car

That is very sad. If it's your car, you should al least know the basic maintenance procedures. You shouldn't be allowed to drive if you don't know what side your tank is on. YDI OP

I'm a forgetful person in general so every once in a while I'll pull up on the wrong side. That part isn't so bad. It's the fact that they can't just get out and check that makes them an asshole.

As a general rule, American made cars tank is on the left, foreign (I live in the US) is on the right. I drove a Subaru and now a Caliber. It took some getting used to.

126 - Over the course of my life, the vehicles my family has been through (and I've driven) are a 1999 Mazda 626, a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander, and a 2013 Toyota Highlander. All of them have the gas caps on the driver's side....

Well, now you know. You can't change the past, all you can do is rely on it in the future...or try to remember... it's not a magical car with a gas pump that keeps switching sides...is it?

And based on the information given in the FML, or lack thereof, I'd assume you only drive the one vehicle, so I think you'll start remembering once you start filling the gas tank up more often. One thing that helps is to check what side it's on before you get in the vehicle every day, then you get used to it being in that location. It's just a quick glance, so it doesn't take up your time, and it helps you to remember faster if your memory problem is based on the fact that you don't fill up that often.

And by gas pump, I mean gas tank, lol. You can tell it's early if I can't even catch my mistakes by the second comment...

I'm sorry, but year and a half? Shouldn't you know by then?

Its either left or right. How hard could that be?

Actually there are some older models that have it in the rear, and a handful of cars with rear-engines that actually have it in the front.

Doesn't the arrow circumvent the need for this? You should go look at your car. It probably has one too. I didn't know this for a long time either, but I was generally good at remembering.

Dammit, OP. You were supposed to DRINK from the fountain of knowledge... Not just gargle and spit back out.

Well, he had to have found it first... and by the looks of it, that didn't happen.

Surprisingly not a lot of people know about that little arrow on the gas gauge pointing to the side of the car with the gas tank. And when you get a new car, sometimes it is difficult to remember which side the gas tank is on. But, usually you can see in the side view mirror. Or, better yet OP, simply opening your door and sticking your head out to look would suffice. I don't understand the calling the parents thing, it's really not THAT complicated. It's on one side or the other, OP, it's not a HUGE mystery. LOL.

I would agree with the whole it's a new car I can't remember thing, but she's had the thing for a year and a half! Come on, OP.

40, *he. Stop making our gender look bad--I know just as many male ditzes as female ones!

I'll admit, I didn't know what the little arrow meant until an ex explained it to me. After he did, it was like a "duh" moment. I guess I never put two and two together...lol. But, I never had to call anyone to tell me what side it was on..i always looked before pulling up to a pump if I wasn't sure...
