Are you qualified to make that kind of decision? Some things can't be counseled away.
True, i’ve been through both of these scenarios (as the patient), and for many people, like me, it takes BOTH of these. Pills aren’t a fix, but neither is dealing with tough issues through just talking. Sometimes it takes one, to face the other. Like climbing a mountain. You don’t just suddenly start climbing. You plan, get the resources, and the support, and once you have all your equipment and support, then you start the difficult journey, otherwise trying to hang on with inadequate support leaves you going over the cliff, and trust me, the plummet will worry everyone else, but the rocks at the bottom will mess you up when you hit them. I hate pills, but without them, a simple hill can look like a mountain when you are so far down, all you can see is your feet. Don’t write them off. They are only tools. But combined together, they make better success and readiness to deal with difficult issues.
Your wife is totally right. There are not the same, psychiatric treatment works together with a psychologist. You need both, one to help balance the brain and the other is to treat the root cause.
To put it more simply for you psychiatrists and psychologists fix the problem ,while counselors and therapists are for after maintenance of the issue. your wife knows what she's doing stop being prejudiced to the mental health field.
People like you are the reason my mom had to sneak me to a psychiatrist when I was in high school; my dad had the same line of thinking as you. If you think all forms of mental illness can be counseled away, then it’s very clear you’ve never dealt with mental illness, and you’re extremely blessed. It’s a chemical imbalance. Your logic is equivalent to not letting your child take an antibiotic for strep throat because he should “get rid of the illness in a healthy way.” Absolutely ridiculous. Your wife will end up getting your child help without you.
