Uncertainty

Today, my parents bought me a wine glass with "Who needs a man?" painted all over it. Cute, until after dinner my mom looked me in the eyes and asked with complete sincerity, "Kara, are you gay?" My parents tried to get me to come out. I'm straight. FML

My parents ask me the same thing almost every week... I'm straight too :(

Yeah, FYL for having parents who are accepting about that. /sarcasm All you had to say was "no" and that's the end. Be thankful you don't have those parents who would disown you if you were.

Well, maybe they had some reason to? It's not that bad.

I wish my parents would do that...

"I Was Told There'd Be Cake" -Sloan Crosley The last chapter/essay contains a bit on how her parents want her to be a lesbian because it would explain so many things - why she's single, why she's not wearing make up/a skirt, etc. My parents think I'm gay (which I'm not) and don't believe in equal rights for homosexuals, so at least your parents seem supportive.

i dont get it. they bought you the glass, but your mom asks if you're gay? that makes no sense.

um, #81, it makes perfect sense. "who needs a guy." meaning her parents think she likes girls. Her name is Kara. SHE IS FEMALE. Context clues, #81, context clues. Ahhh, what parents read into these days. :(

At least they would have been supportive. My parents told my I had a psychological problem and should go to therapy when I came out. And how is being gay an insult anyway? I have to live my life with people assuming I'm straight, don't I?

you know you live in a messed up society when your parents think that your not having a relationship means you're gay.

I don't think that she's offended because they thought she was gay. It was probably more of embarrassment because she hadn't had a boyfriend for a while so they just assumed. Which frankly, can hurt
