If he kept it I doubt he'd be able to cash it if it has your name on it. If he really did "accidentally" throw it away I'd be "accidentally" making his ass dig through the trash and find it.

Haha fyl. Something similar happened to me- my dad threw away a comp panel i had by my computer, it had my XP code on it. Sucked because i needed to reformat my computer. FOL

Ring up the tax department, have the check cancelled and have them send you a new one.

@14: That's really a problem? You're not a very seeing user then. To OP: 16 is right, as long as it hasn't been cashed you shouldn't have a problem, though it would definitely take a good bit of time, but eventually you'll get your money back. In the mean time, I would definitely make your dad advance you the cash.
