If it were me that this happened to, I would just tell her politely that I would not like a tie as a present. It keeps it from happening again, in any case.

Well ill be the devils advocate for a second and say this in OPs defence, that was a really bad gift from his girlfriend, she clearly doesnt care enough about her boyfriend to get him something nice or put any effort in, I mean can you imagine if it was a woman and her boyfriend bought her some hair clips or some stupid shit, this would be a non stop attack on her boyfriend, so OP you said the stupidest possible thing and your girlfriend really needs to put more effort in her gifts.
