Today, I was out shopping with my son and unbeknownst to me, he had secretly added a bunch of expensive games he wanted to the trolley. I was too embarrassed at the till to make a fuss as there was a huge line behind me. I watched as my normal £50 shopping bill climbed to over £400. FML

Here's an idea. Put the damn games back and discipline your kid.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but you need to take control of your life before your son ends up the most spoiled, demanding child you've ever met. You taught him a lesson today - "Mom won't cause a scene, so I can get away with whatever I want in a public place".

Exactly. Say no, tell him to put the games back, and be done with it. There's no fuss if you simply say it once and that's that.

When this happened to me, I said no, and had him put the stuff back, and then grounded him for two weeks. Never happened again. What I don't understand though, is how OP didn't see the stuff in the cart while unloading it on the conveyor though.

Fuck that take all his games lock them in a see through case in his room

Since she already bought them she should just make a big show of playing them herself and having a great time

My parents flip if I pick up something that's £2, and we're not even hard for money. OP should've just left them on the side or got them refunded straight away before teaching their child not to be a little shit.

If I ever tried to pull this shit when I was young, my parents would have put the shit back and whooped my ass later. There's clearly a lack of respect here if the son knows he didn't have permission to buy the games but put them in the cart anyways.

Exactly clerks understand that kids sometimes do this and don't care if you unload saying I don't want any of these.

Now your son will remember that you don't stand up for yourself in public and he will try to get what he wants more often this way. I know it's embarrassing, I would totally feel the same way, but he needs to learn that this behavior will not be tolerated. And it's better to do that in the store, before buying stuff you didn't intend to get, than at home when he has the games already.

You're just teaching him that you may be a pushover when there's people around. I used to try to do this with candy when I was younger, it never worked.

Hey. Guess what? You're the parent, OP. It's YOUR JOB to keep your kid in line. If your son is being a sneaky little shit and putting games in the trolley that you clearly have no intent on purchasing, TAKE THEM OUT. If you don't, he will continue to see you as a pushover. Hardcore YDI.

Did he atleast get good games?

Tell him that if he can be sneaky that you can be to just tell him that you bought them you can give them to who ever you like so sell them and teach him a lesson

That's actually a really good idea

A more evil one would be to play the games yourself in front of him and not allow him to play. If OP is good at games, her son will have the entire game's plot ruined as she ploughs through all the levels. If OP is bad at games, her son may actually lose his mind with frustration every time he watches her die from things he's sure he could have gotten past.

Or be an adult.

That ship has already sailed. Unless OP is willing to return the games (and let's face it, it sounds like her social anxiety won't let her), the only thing she can do now is teach her kid to regret his choice. So just taking his console / computer off him until he pays her back wouldn't be enough cause he'd still have 350 pounds worth of games at the end of it.

You should have made a scene. He's have been much more embarrassed by you making him feel small in front of all those people than you would. He wouldn't have tried it again. But it's done now, so: Either return them all. Or sell them on at a loss and take the loss out of his allowance. If he doesn't have an allowance then make him earn the lost money back.

Comment moderated for rule-breaking.

Show it anyway

She doesn't even have to reprimand him. Just say no honey take those back to where you got them. Roll her eyes at the cashier and say "Kids!" and finish her shopping.

That's going to teach him a valuable lesson...

I see what you did there... VALUABLE lesson.

I feel like this comment is way overlooked lol
