Today, I started my job as a waiter. I was excited when my first customer paid for the bill. I go over to the table, half-expecting a tip. I got to the table and no money was on the table. On the bottom receipt was written: "Ever heard of deodorant?" Apparently I smell bad. Thanks for the tip. FML

That tip was worth more than any $ you could have gotten...

unfortunate that it happened, and that was a rude comment. still, body odor really makes me lose my appetite. i would be frustrated if i went to a nice restaurant, paid for my food, and my server's sweat made me too nauseous to enjoy it. hope the rest of the job goes better for you op :)

**** tips, when I go to a restaurant I don't ask for a stupid waiter. They should give you an option. I would rather walk up to the counter and get my own damn food. Screw paying 15-20%. It's like they force full service down your throat. This is why I never go to sit down restaurants unless I am forced.

Reading these comments is like a stab to the heart! I've been a server my entire time in college and have worked so hard (going into overtime while a full-time student) to be able to pay tuition and rent and bills. In this country, servers generally are paid $2.13/hour. All of that is taken out in taxes. We do not get paychecks. If we don't get tipped, we don't get paid. 15-20% is standard. I've worked random jobs since I was 13, and working in a restaurant is the most stressful so far. #91, dieburnbot, if you believe this service is being forced upon you, I am grateful of your decision to stay at home. I do understand, however, that there can be some extremely incompetent servers. Perhaps you do not believe they deserve a tip. Fair enough. Please do not try to ignore the fact that gratuity does not mean "extra money."

How do we know the customers weren't just being Dicks to the waiter? For all we know he could have smelled like a handful of heavenly roses, and the customers just didn't want to tip?

i alwaystip well, because i understand how shitty waiting is.

My friend is a server here in Nevada, and she makes 7.50 an hour (min. wage). She also only ends up with a paycheck (every 2 weeks) of around $200, they tax the heck out of her check (they tax based on the amount of tips you receive, and credit card tips HAVE to be monitored, cash tips are the only ones they can get away with not reporting every once in a while) , so she does rely on tips. When she was working in Arizona, the hourly wage was only around $4 an hour. It depends on the state, some states are lower, some higher. After tips, she always ends up making more money than I do (which is about twice her hourly rate), but I don't get tips. So, yes, servers depend on tips. Otherwise she'd be making $400/month. Not nearly enough to live on, heck, that's not even enough for rent.
