It's not that bad. I've actually performed this procedure on myself. The pain is way worse left untreated.
My dad is a roof carpenter, he smashed his thumb pretty hard once and I watched him drill through his own nail to relieve the pressure
Very common practice which I do both in clinic and ER. It'sa very old but very effective treatment unless the digit is fractured.
I've had it done that part actually doesn't hurt it just sounds like it would!

This is so common I wonder why it's an fml. Though when that happened to me the nail was already dead and the blood was too dry for that to work, so the nail just fell off and grew back.
It's not really that bad. I slammed my fingers in a door when I was a kid, no doctor, just my dad with a lighter and a sewing pin. it looks more painful than it actually is, and it feels about a thousand times better after, plus it heals faster.
