If you're so confident in the legitimacy of your argument, why do you have to try to protect it from counter-argument by setting up a false dichotomy? Let me go ahead and brush that aside by presenting a third option: Some people might legitimately feel that this is an area where legal regulation would be vastly too vulnerable to subjectivity and misuse, or be concerned the inevitable glitches and hiccups that come with massive bureaucracy on such an important subject, or the tremendous associated financial and resource costs at a time when many places are quite strapped for both. Then we have the entirely separate unresolved issue of whether any life at all is better than no life at all - a subject that has been debated for, to put it lightly, a very long time, and which you would need to resolve completely before you could even defend this. Bit more complicated than "You're mentally deficient or naive", isn't it?
