Today, after spending months learning Chinese, selling my house and everything I own for my big transfer to Hong Kong, my boss decided I should instead go to our other branch across town. FML

Today, I'm working in China and I had to explain to my boss that no, it's not okay to not pay me for 3 months. FML
Today, I finished moving to my new apartment, which is 45 minutes away from my old one, because my workplace would be closer. I then got a phone call from my boss, telling me that he's transferring me to another location, which is closer to my old apartment. FML
Today, I handed my boss my 2 weeks' notice. 20 minutes later, I was doing my work alone in the very cold basement of the building. My boss claimed it was a routine relocation planned months in advance. It's going to be a long 2 weeks. FML
Today, I landed my dream job with an international company. I figured I could work this until retirement, only to find out they hired me to shut down operations in my market. FML
Today, it's my first day as the boss, after waiting months for this promotion. Today is also the day my replacement, who I trained for three months, quit. Now I've got two jobs for the price of one. FML
Today, I got a phone call from my boss, who'd hired me after two months of waiting and begging for this position. A week into the job, the company is closing our store. FML
Today, I was denied entry into Hong Kong after flying here from Canada and paying thousands of uncancellable dollars for quarantine hotel and other plans, because the immigration company fucked up. FML
Today, I left my job, fulfilling my one month's notice after receiving a job offer from a much better-paying role. After saying goodbye to everyone, I left the building. Not two minutes later, the company who was offering the new job called to say they'd changed their minds, and there was now no longer a job on offer. FML
Today, after moving 1,400 miles across the country, quitting my full-time job, and selling most of my furniture to attend flight school, I got a call a month before my start date saying that they are closing my location. FML
Today, I learned that the manager I switched jobs to escape 7 months ago will be my new boss. FML

88 - Only some do - most likely he would have been interacting with many Chinese speaking clients. I live in the states, but one of my dads airports for work is in Hong Kong, he spends most of his life there.

I very highly doubt that OP is fluent in Chinese, sorry to tell you. It takes years, especially if OP's native language doesn't have tones. Since they're Canadian, we can guess that they most likely don't. Chinese can take ten+ years to become fluent. I've studied for four and I'm not fluent. The bright side isn't that they know Chinese. More that they don't have to move across the planet. Beautiful country though.

A lot of people in Hong Kong speak Cantonese instead of mandarin. When they do speak mandarin, it is often with a heavy accent, so OP would have a hard time trying to understand them.

If there is no language called Chinese there is no language called English, Norwegian, or German. Being this dickheaded about it is like saying "English? There is only British English or American English. Not just English.", or when someone says they're learning Norwegian saying that there is no such language, only bokmal and norsk. Obviously, if they say they're learning something and specify what region they're going to, they're unexplicitly saying what branch and dialect of the language they have learned. Since OP is going to Hong Kong I seriously doubt they would be stupid enough to learn anything but Cantonese. When you expect to be relocated somewhere, you usually don't just say "k." and learn nothing about the place in the months leading up to transfer.

That's tough and it sucks that you had to sell all your stuff but look on the bright side, you learnt a new language, you get to stay home ( trust me moving to a new land with new people sucks big time) and finally you get new stuff assuming you still have the money from selling your house
