It means to go negative. For some reason, there are those who think insults and put-downs are a good strategy for dating.

Back-handed compliments that are really put downs to lower the victim's self-esteem ... it's a form of sexual "grooming" and emotional manipulation to in an attempt to get the victim to try to gain approval from the attacker.
