After 9 years of waiting, it’s probably your fault for being unwilling to commit, or there were fundamental issues keeping you from committing and you probably shouldn’t my have used engagement as a tool to try and spark life back into a dying relationship.

I'm sorry it turned out that way. You dodged a bullet, no more split of assets or alimony. You got the money back from the ring, and you weren't tied to someone who changed their mind after the fact.

I am sorry for both of you, this is a difficult situation. At least you could return the ring. But now there is the matter of the jointly owned house...
This can happen anytime, but this past year has tended to put extra stress on relationships and families with more forced togetherness and less time with friends.

Who gets the house? Do you have kids? Joint bank account?
And why did you wait NINE years?
