Never ever

Today, a guy for whom I did a design job told me he would only be able to pay me in 3 weeks. I told him that it was OK, as long as I didn't have to follow him around to collect my money. "Don't worry, I know the feeling," he said, "I used to run an illegal business." FML

The mans word is his word, and he said "used" to. Two strong reasons to build a trusting partnership.

I don't know if I'd trust that "in three weeks" crap...

Being in Colorado I can only guess at what illegal business he used to run. Besides, always get such things in writing even when you're not dealing with ex-illegal-business-owners :)

Used to- as in the past... Apparently turned themselves around... Have a little faith.

I hope you had a contract set up! The contract will help ensure that you receive payment; otherwise, you can take them to court if they neglect or refuse to pay.

you may get money for this job but not in future jobs.. stay away

Guys... He probably way a weed dealer in Colorado, which is now legal... That's all...

No. When a job is done payment is expected. It's as simple as that. Not three weeks later. You may have been duped

In my business if I do a job for someone they dont get their car back until I either get payment or they sign a contract to pay within a certain time. If they dont pay by the set date they go to court. I only offer this option on rare occasions if its someone who needs their car running to get to work and they ask politely. They cant get to work, they cant make money to pay you. Not everyone can have money ready for emergency repairs and doesnt make sense to make it even harder to get paid. In OP's case it sounds like a personal job or something that doesnt affect business, I wouldnt give him the design until he pays you for it.

oh no, he USED to run an illegal business? That must mean he's a crook and won't pay. It's that kind of thinking that leads to recitivism.
