Today, my manager did that thing where he gave me a performance-based bonus last month, but deducted the bonus from this months pay. He didn’t even try to hide it, it said in plain English "Amount deducted for previous performance bonus." FML

It is. The boss may have made a mistake awarding the bonus and taking it back is legal, albeit in bad taste.

Never go to HR if you have a problem with your boss. HR are the hired thugs of management to shield them from litigation over shit like this. Too many working people think HR is some kind of neutral arbiter and they could not be more wrong.
