Today, I confided to my dad that since the recent breakup with my boyfriend of 3 months, I feel down all the time and life doesn't feel worth living anymore. His loving advice was for me to "grow the fuck up and get your sentimental head out of la-la land." FML

Today, I went to my father for advice. I've been seeing a wonderful girl for the past month, and I feel terrible about it, because I already have a girlfriend. He said "Kill yourself" and that if I "can't even do that right" then to get out of his house, because he disowns me. FML

Today, I was sitting in my room when my dad walked in to talk. He said I'm not the son he'd hoped for, and that he'd been let down as a father. He said I should change the way I am so that he could love me more. It was the longest conversation I've had with my dad in years. FML

OP, regardless of what anyone says, there's no objective timeline for matters of the heart. Whatever works for you and for the other person--and it's not unreasonable of you to be upset when a relationship ends. For right now, you feel how you feel. Just know that your life will feel worthwhile again--I'm sorry that your dad was unsympathetic.

Well your dad may have been a bit insensitive about the subject, you should understand that the guy was your boyfriend for 3 months. Sure it was longer than a week, but the sooner the break-up the better. So it won't hurt you more than it would. The way your father was harsh, but the gist of his statement is true. It is a tough live, especially when it comes to love. Just buckle down and keep your chin up. Like I said, it was 3 months. It will be semi-difficult, but you will be fine overall.
