just factory resetting, not scrapping... but honestly now you've learned your lesson. Don't keep all your files in 1 place, deffo not on a shared laptop. get an external hard drive that only gets connected to a PC when those files need to be accessed and make a backup of your backup if it's THAT important.

Always make backups of important files. Your laptop’s HDD/SSD might as well just have given up the ghost on its own. Keep ideally have backups multiple places and something off-site. Cloud memory is cheap if it’s just some pictures and it’s safe even if your house burns down.
