Great gift

By Meh - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, two days before my birthday, my parents drove three hours to visit me at school and take me out to lunch. I assumed that it was to celebrate my birthday. They told me they are getting divorced. FML

Shit sucks, just don't put any blame on yourself. Also people need to get their sarcasm detectors fixed. :p

@ #4...shut the hell up. Anyway, I'm sorry! Talk about shitty timing. I can tell you from experience though that it's not as bad as you may think. Just remember that it's not your fault, marriages don't work out sometimes. Try not to let it ruin your birthday, though I know this kind of thing can seem overwhelming at first.

Second worst birthday gift ever... (the first is when a family member dies-happened to me and my father....:( )

#4, I agree. How dare the poster be upset that their life is about to change drastically on account of their parents getting divorced. We all know it's just a myth that kids care whether or not their parents are actually together and love each other. Next thing you know she'll be upset that one of them had an affair or they're dog got ran over without considering how traumatizing it is for the person driving the car. Gosh, kids these days.

**** anyone who thinks she deserves this. Along with death, divorce is a really common yet crushing thing that could happen to parents' relationships. I'm really sorry that this was the outcome. I feel your pain, and happy birthday.

How ironic. I share the same birthday as you and I totally forgot mine. Furthermore, my parents also forgot. They are planning to go to Mexico on my birthday without me. My sympathy for you. Happy early birthday, by the way.

my parents got divorced when i was really young. i know how it feels. your life feels empty and incomplete. and you have times where you blame yourself even though its not your fault. and you naturally think that you were not meant to be happy. it just sucks. but what you gotta do is remind yourself that even though they are divorced, they still love you and will always be there for you.

seriously 17? i don't know what your parents did to ruin your childhood but i think most people definitely care about if their parents love each other and are together. and i agree this was an epic fail by the parents for their timing. i know they are going through a tough emotional experience too, but its nice to think about the kids as well.

Ouch, that blows. Way to ruin a birthday! I'm sorry!
